Aden crater evening hike and Sunset/Moonrise photography workshop

  • Meet at Dairy queen 6990 North Desert Boulevard El Paso, TX, 79912 United States (map)

Join us for an evening hike at Aden Crater followed by a photography session presented by local Audubon Society guide, Estrella Posada and Geologist, Dr. Katalina Salas.

Aden Crater is an Icelandic-type shield volcano northwest of El Paso and is located at the center of the Potrillo volcanic field. The massive lava flow where NASA astronauts trained during the 1960s is also used today as a test site for future instruments and techniques that will be used in upcoming space exploration missions. After our hike, Estrella and Katalina will provide us with a small workshop on sunset photography followed by a great opportunity to photograph the moonrise rise after. This is a perfect environment to take some amazing photos and learn about our local geologic history.

Bring plenty of water and dress for rough terrain. The hike is easy to moderate, sturdy, durable hiking shoes, flashlights and/or headlamps are also highly recommended.

High-clearance vehicles are a must due to the rough and rocky road. The drive is approximately 1.5 hours to the crater from El Paso. The hike is roughly 2 hours round trip and the Sunset/Moon photo session will begin right before sunset.

You are welcome to bring your own telescopes, binoculars, and cameras.

Meet at the Dairy queen on the corner of Transmountain and Desert Blvd. North (https://maps.app.goo.gl/LgP85Dy2BFV2QKSGA ) at 1:00 pm.
