Dinosaurs of Mt. Cristo Rey

Come visit El Paso’s only dinosaur fossils, discovered in 2002 by a UTEP student at Cerro de Cristo Rey!

This trip will be a leisurely walk on the North side of Cristo Rey to look at marine fossils, cool layers of sedimentary rocks, and dinosaur footprints. This dinosaur tracksite is from the middle-Cretaceous period, and is the southernmost extension of the “Dinosaur Freeway.” There is much history at this location, and we will discuss Paleontology, Archaeology, WWI and 20th century impacts to the land, as well as current developments. Your guide is an expert Interpretive Naturalist and has been leading groups out at Cerro de Cristo Rey since 2002. Make sure to bring a camera and plenty of water.

The trip starts at 9am, Saturday, October 22. We will meet on Cristo Rey Rd, Sunland Park, NM, south of the 1st set of railroad tracks. (Map)

Yes the area is safe, as we will not be hiking up the mountain. Children are welcome, as long as they are supervised… there are several areas that are dangerous for unsupervised children.

Hope to see you out there!!

What time will this be taking place? Are children able to take part as well?

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I changed the field trip description. It begins at 9am and we will be meeting on Cristo Rey Rd, Sunland Park, NM, south of the first set of railroad tracks. Kids are welcome! But there are a few dangerous spots to keep them in sight.
    Thanks,
